Weird Insurance Policies You Probably Weren’t Aware Of
Most of us have insurance policies for motor, health, life, home and other valuables. However, life can be extremely unpredictable, and you never know what happens next.
What would you do if you were abducted by aliens? What if your house was infested by bed bugs?
What if your fiancé changed his/her mind? What if your wedding got cancelled due to a natural calamity?
What if your wife, who was pregnant, gave birth to triplets instead of just one child? How would you afford the expenses?
Probably you are an actor known for your sunny smile. What if your smile didn’t remain the same?
No need to worry but bizarre as it may sound, there is an insurance policy to cover each of the above scenarios.
1. Wedding insurance
Wedding insurance primarily protects against financial losses if you need to cancel the event due to a natural disaster or personal tragedy, like a death in the family. Some policies also cover cancellation of a couple’s honeymoon.
2. Change of heart, a.k.a. cold feet insurance
This is essentially a unique type of event cancellation coverage, change of heart insurance is a policy designed to protect parents and other “innocent financiers” of a wedding that gets called off due to a change of heart. Should the happy couple become not-so-happy soon enough before the big day and call the whole thing off, change of heart insurance can help refund some of those deposits made by family members, friends, etc.
3. Alien abduction insurance
In the event you’re paranoid about a UFO or alien abduction, you can insure yourself for the same. It seems to be pretty popular in Europe, where one U.K.-based insurer has sold more than 30,000 such policies across the continent. You should note that most of these policies may just be satire. However, you’ll need to show proof that the flying saucer – and the little green men who poked and prodded you – were, in fact, real in order to collect your damages.
4. Multiple birth insurance
Since ultrasounds and advanced medical technologies prepare you well in advance for multiple births, it may not completely take you by surprise. But it doesn’t make parents any more prepared with expenses of raising multiple children. So, you may consider buying a multiple – or twin – birth insurance policy, which requires you to buy your premium at the time of pregnancy; if twins or more are the result, the policy pays out in cash accordingly to compensate for the extra costs that extra babies bring.
5. Bed bug insurance
Getting rid of bed bugs from your domicile is not cheap. Add to that the costs to replace an infested mattress! You may consider adding bed bug insurance to your existing renters or homeowner’s insurance policy; and if you’re a frequent traveller, you can add travel coverage to your rider, since most of the pests are picked up outside the home.
6. Body part insurance
Actors, singers, athletes and entertainers get paid big bucks to do what they do, so it seems likely that they’ll want to insure the asset(s) that make them rich and famous in the first place, since their careers would be nothing without them. For example, Rihanna’s legs are reportedly worth $1 million. Rihanna apparently made the decision to insure her legs after having been awarded Gillette’s Venus Breeze Celebrity Legs of a Goddess award in 2007, protecting them for a large sum to insure that she’d be covered if they ever got less beautiful… As one of the highest paid actresses in the world, Julia Robert’s smile is somewhat iconic. And that’s why the actress insured hers, or more specifically her teeth, for $30 million. The Pretty Woman star put a price on her smile to protect her most beautiful feature.
